How Marketade Built a High-Impact UX Research Lab for a Federal Agency
A quasi-federal government agency was eager to increase user-centered design across its thousands of staff and hundreds of web properties. In 2024, Marketade began a 15-month engagement to build and manage a remote UX research lab. Highlights include:
On track to complete 18 end-to-end usability testing studies within 15 months
Partnered with over 10 agency units and over 50 product stakeholders across these units, including designers, content writers, and senior leaders
Conducted 1:1 interviews with over 125 end-users of products, from the general public to specialized professionals
Created and managed the process for teams to request studies and for the lab to prioritize and schedule projects
Developing an internal dashboard to share learnings and success stories from the program
Built a repeatable study template that allows the lab to scale and continue past Marketade's engagement

How Our Ongoing Programs Work
Over nearly two decades, a wide range of enterprise and mid-size organizations have teamed up with us to build, scale, and run continuous research programs and remote UX testing labs that deliver insights, design thinking, and action.

We Run Studies
From day 1, we focus on conducting end-to-end research studies that support your teams. This is usually 70-85% of our hours.
For most programs, we run 2-4 studies at a time and 15-20 studies per year.
For most clients, around 75% of our studies focus on qualitative usability testing of live products and prototypes.
We also lead discovery research, personas and journey maps, quantitative surveys, and information architecture research.

We Operate Your Program
As we run studies, we develop a repeatable study template that makes it easier to scale your program.
We build a process for product teams to request studies; we evaluate and score potential projects and recommend the best methods and approaches for each.
We manage the study pipeline and regularly check in with your team to prioritize future projects.
We provide monthly updates to a detailed budget tracking spreadsheet that breaks out your spending by study, month, and other categories.

We Promote Your Insights
We build and manage an internal marketing dashboard for your research program, featuring study overviews, key program metrics, and research wins.
We regularly look across your studies, identify shared insights, and help all teams learn from past research.
We write internal success stories, showing how research is helping teams understand their users and improve their products.

One-Time User Research Studies
In addition to ongoing programs, each year we lead a small number of standalone research projects. These are typically complex studies that require multiple rounds of qualitative research and/or a mix of methods. Our toolkit includes UX research (usability testing, content testing, card sorts) and discovery research (user interviews, personas, journey maps, concept/MVP testing).
